From the recording The Great Majority
Lyrics
Where do I go from here said the beggar on his knees
Begging is just like praying without eternity
A few good men have died and a few have just grown old
Sleeping on the sidewalk and praying for parole
A thousand passers by only yields a dime
But a dime will get him somewhere because all he's got is time
The clothes he wears are tattered, but he's not a holy man
At night he dreams of sailboats from a far off, distant land
He hasn't cried in twenty years, he wonders if he can
He only knows his age from the wrinkles on his hand
His teeth began to fall out but the fairy never came
Sometimes when he's lonely he whispers his own name
He had a wife and child, she turns thirty-five today
He got caught up getting caught up and all that went away
He won't walk her down the aisle or know his grandsons name
But wishing is for the hopeful, their grave both read the same
The beggar begged the people, the people prayed to God so surely
No one's prayers were answered so he joined the great majority
No one ever missed him, hell they didn't know he was gone
A beggar is just a beggar and life it must go on
